Spotify patents available to the world!

It is a common misconception that patenting has something to do with keeping secrets, while it is actually just the opposite - it is a way of gaining protection for your innovation, on the condition that you publicly disclose it for the world to see.

Even if you don't get the patent, your information will remain publicly available (as far as I know), and if you get the patent, you're still gonna have to pay the yearly fees to maintain the protection. In this sense, patent databases are hardly just lists of licensing obstacles to avoid or purchase, but vast repositories of knowledge on methods and solutions. Repositories which are largely ignored.

My friend Martin who this weekend visited Tallinn notified me that there would be a Spotify patent out there in the names of the people we know there, Ehn, Strigeus et al. Said and done, break out ep.espacenet.com and go search, and anyone can find the either 11-page US or 14-page European patent applications for Spotify. Go to the "Original document" tab, ignore the one page preview and instead choose the "Save Full Document" link, fill in the CAPTCHA and you can download the full PDF.

• OnLive (a cool streaming gaming solution)

Browsing around for how the Computer Sweden guy picked up on this blog post, he thinks it may have been through @jocke, I find that my other friend @erikstarck had RT'd the patent before me and a fine article about the costs for running Spotify. My insider info - the licensing costs are very relevant, someone has spent a lot of work to be able to keep a music service which is both free and legal alive. And they are doing their best to manage the network costs, while paying attention to that as you grow, your role in the network affects how much you have to pay someone for what)

Nerd tip 1 - Put your video conference window by the camera!

Many of you have probably tried for example Skype video conferencing only to be frustrated by that it doesn't feel like very natural or good communication. I discovered a very simple and possibly obvious remedy to improve the situation - put your video window close to the camera!


Of course you need to look into the camera in order not to feel absent, but I hadn't thought of that where you position the video window matters to connect when you pay attention and look at the window with when you look into the camera. In all of the three windows above I am looking at the video window, but only in the middle one would it seem like I'm paying attention to the person I'm talking to.

Of course this works also when you want to record something on camera like I did above. Please excuse that I'm otherwise so inexperienced in front of the camera and speaking according to a script :-) .

FUF stöder Unga Forskare IRC-chat!

Vad det handlar om är alltså min ansträngning att bidra med något dels för att nydana Förbundet Unga Forskare, dels för att bli en plats på nätet som "Unga Forskare"-typer (ni vet alla ungefär vad jag menar... :-) ) kommer dras till så att de kan få veta att FUF finns för dem... och till sist vill jag göra det på ett roligt och berikande sätt, det ska inte kosta mer än det smakar att engagera sig!

Som ett första steg så skapade jag för ett taq sedan två inofficiella FUF-chats, och har jobbat en del för att dra folk till dem. Framför allt så är det #fuf.org på chat.freenode.net (den länken funkar om man t.ex. har ChatZilla installerat). Givetvis var det en större utmaning än jag trodde att bara starta en IRC-kanal sådär, t.ex. så vill ju inte folk installera några program, så istället fixade jag bara två klick för att besöka FUF på IRC! Ge länken till kompisarna, spara den och viktigast av allt, klicka på den! Det är via den förtjusande tjänsten mibbit.com det, och de tillhandahåller också widgeten här nedan:



Dock... så är det ju inte allt heller. Det jag har märkt är att folk kommer in i kanalen, är tysta några minuter, kanske säger något, blir besvikna över att inte få något svar och går sen. Tyvärr så kan ju inte jag sitta vid datorn hela tiden och vakta IRC-kanalen och se till att prata med alla som kommer in, och det känns inte rimligt att anordna någon slags formell jour heller (åtminstone känns det som en tråkig idé). Så det vi behöver just nu är en grupp på drygt 20 "stammisar", som känner för att prata med mig och varandra, och som förstår att det inte är så farligt om det är tyst en stund. Ni som inte fungerar med de premisserna får helt enkelt ge er till tåls, ni är jättevälkomna att hälsa på och stanna så länge ni vill, men när det inte finns folk i kanalen... så kanske ingen svarar den minuten (eller ens timmen) just du är där :-) .
